The lesser black-backed gull is a large gull that breeds on the Atlantic and Arctic coasts of Europe and is migratory, wintering from the British Isles south to West Africa. It measures 51 to 64 cm with a wingspan of 124 to 150 cm and weighs 452 to 1,100 g. It is smaller than the European herring gull, and five subspecies are accepted (Wikipedia, general species account).

Together with the herring gull it forms a complicated ring-species group around the Northern Hemisphere, and authorities recognise between two and eight species in the complex. It has also increased sharply in North America.
