The lesser whistling-duck is a chestnut-brown, long-necked duck with broad wings, resident across lowland wetlands of the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It has an orange to yellow ring round the eye, and can be told from the larger fulvous whistling-duck by its chestnut rump. The sexes look alike (Wikipedia, general species account).

It feeds mainly at night and rests by day in flocks on lakes and wet paddy fields, and it can perch in trees and sometimes nests in tree hollows. In flight it gives a repeated, wheezy two-note whistle.
