The lesser whitethroat is a common and widespread Old World warbler that breeds in temperate Europe, except the south-west, and in the western and central Palearctic. Unlike many warblers the sexes are almost identical. It is a bird of fairly open country and cultivation, with large bushes for nesting and some trees (Wikipedia, general species account).

It is strongly migratory, wintering in Africa just south of the Sahara, in Arabia and in India. The nest is built in low shrub or brambles with three to seven eggs. The song is a fast, rattling sequence of 'tet' or 'che' calls, quite different from the common whitethroat's scolding song. The source does not describe its status in China (Wikipedia, general species account).
