The melon-headed whale is a small, streamlined oceanic dolphin with a sharply tapered head, no distinct beak and a dark facial mask. The species occurs throughout deep tropical and subtropical oceans and is rarely found close to shore except near oceanic islands or deep coastal channels. (Wikipedia, general species account)
It eats squid, small fish and shrimp, often foraging at night when deep-water prey move upward. Melon-headed whales are highly social and commonly form tightly packed schools of several hundred animals, sometimes associating with Fraser's dolphins or other oceanic cetaceans.
