The Mongolian three-toed jerboa is a small desert rodent with elongated hind legs, short forelimbs and a very long tail ending in a contrasting tuft. The three functional toes of each hind foot bear stiff hairs that improve movement over loose ground. It occurs in arid parts of Mongolia and northern China. At night it travels by rapid bipedal hops while searching for seeds, green vegetation and insects. (Wikipedia, general species account)
