Owston's palm civet is a long, slender viverrid patterned with broad dark bands across a pale body. Two bands begin near the eyes and divide across the shoulders, while further transverse bands cross the back and end near the first third of the tail; the remaining tail is dark. Adults weigh 2–3kg and measure 54.5–59cm from nose to tail base, with a nearly body-length tail of 42.5–55cm. (Animal Diversity Web)
Its restricted range covers Vietnam, eastern Laos and a small part of southern China. It inhabits humid tropical and subtropical forests from lowlands to montane areas, avoiding landscapes with an extreme dry season. The species is nocturnal and generally solitary. Although capable of climbing, it spends much of its time on the forest floor, searching through leaf litter for earthworms and other invertebrates; soft fruit and additional plant matter supplement the diet.
