Basic stats

Range

Southeast Asia and parts of Indochina

Size

39–43mm snout–vent length

The rice field frog is a 39–43mm dicroglossid with a pointed projecting snout, conspicuous tympanum and half-webbed toes. Its grey-brown or olive back may carry a pale vertebral stripe and a dark V between the eyes; the limbs and lips are barred, while the underside is white. Several genetic variants occur within what has historically been called Fejervarya limnocharis, and molecular studies indicate that the name may conceal multiple species. Verified records place the species in Southeast Asia and Indochina, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. Older reports from outside this core range have frequently proved to involve other members of the species complex. It can occur in heavily altered landscapes: the species has been recorded from Malaysian oil-palm plantations and is also collected for food in parts of mainland Southeast Asia.
