The reed parrotbill (Paradoxornis heudei) is found in Manchuria, eastern China and the Russian Far East and is threatened by habitat loss. The northern subspecies polivanovi is sometimes regarded as a separate species, the northern parrotbill. It has a significantly short, wide and deep bill, and is the only parrotbill that changes its appearance between the breeding and non-breeding seasons: in winter it has a pinkish-cream and ash-grey forehead and neck.
