Basic stats

Range

Dauria region of Russia and neighbouring steppe

Size

28–30 cm; males 200–340 g, females 290–330 g

The Daurian partridge, also called the steppe partridge, Asian grey partridge or bearded partridge (Perdix dauurica), is a rotund gamebird of the pheasant family, roughly 28–30 cm long. Its name derives from the Dauria region of Russia, which forms part of its distribution. In autumn males weigh about 200–340 g and females 290–330 g. (Wikipedia, general species account)

Both sexes have a sandy-orange face and long feathers under the beak forming a 'beard', with the rest of the head and underparts pale slate-grey, a buff line on the chest and a black belly patch; the female's belly patch is smaller and she is slightly duller. The song is like a higher-pitched, sped-up version of the grey partridge's, a shrill, grating kieerr-ik. (Wikipedia, general species account)
