The pied wheatear is a small insectivorous Old World flycatcher, a migratory central Asian wheatear that occurs from the extreme south-east of Europe to China and has been found wintering in India and north-eastern Africa. The breeding range runs from Romania and Bulgaria to Siberia, the Altai and Mongolia and south to the Caucasus, Turkestan, Iran and Afghanistan. It is a very rare vagrant to western Europe. The male is a boldly marked black-and-white bird with a brown-tinged white crown, a black face and throat and a white rump; the female is browner with a sandy-buff wash on the head. It nests in open, stony, sparsely vegetated regions, laying four to six greenish-blue eggs with rust-coloured spots in a hole, under a stone or in a rock crevice from early May. It eats mainly insects but will take seeds, and the male sings a low-pitched, musical song in early summer and again in August. (Wikipedia, general species account)
