The pin-tailed snipe breeds in northern Russia and spends the non-breeding season in southern Asia from Pakistan to Indonesia. It is 25 to 27 cm long, mottled brown above with cream lines down the back, with a long straight dark bill, short greenish-grey legs and a streaked buff breast (Wikipedia, species account).
It resembles the common snipe but has a shorter bill and tail, less pointed wings and no white trailing edge, and a flatter flight when flushed. It forages in mud or soft soil for insects and earthworms, and is found in wetlands, sometimes drier ones than the common snipe.
