Habitat
Alpine meadow and plateau grassland
Range
Tibetan Plateau of China
Size
Approximately 16–25cm head-and-body length
The plateau zokor is a stocky subterranean rodent with reduced eyes, no external ears, a short tail and powerful foreclaws. Its dense grey-brown coat and cylindrical body suit life in narrow tunnels. The species is native to the Tibetan Plateau of China, where it occurs in alpine meadow and plateau grassland. (Wikipedia, general species account)
It feeds below ground on roots, tubers and plant stems and creates conspicuous soil mounds while extending its burrow network. Most activity takes place underground in feeding passages, nest chambers and storage areas, insulating the animal from severe plateau weather. (Wikipedia, general species account)
