The plumbeous water redstart is a 14cm streamside flycatcher. Males are slate blue with rusty-red tails, whereas females are pale grey with a contrasting white rump. It inhabits fast-moving streams, rocky rivers and shaded banks across China and southern Asia, often favoring waterways rich in flying insects such as mayflies. Birds defend stretches of river and catch insects by rising above the water before spiraling back to a perch. Himalayan populations descend from high elevations during winter.
