Like other shrikes it hunts from prominent perches and impales prey on thorns or barbed wire as a 'larder', which earned it the nickname 'butcher bird'. In the male the upperparts are reddish, while in the female and young birds they are brown (Wikipedia, general species account).

Its breeding range stretches from Western Europe east to central Russia, and it winters in the eastern areas of tropical Africa and in southern Africa. The source does not describe its status in China (Wikipedia, general species account).
