It is a terrestrial snake with a preference for cool climates, which restricts it to hills and mountain plateaus. It is crepuscular, spends most of its time hiding in leaf litter, under moss or under rocks and logs, and eats mainly rodents and other small mammals. The head is small and squarish, and the pattern combines red or orange with black bands or stripes. (Wikipedia, general species account)
