3-4 eggs
The red-wattled lapwing is a large Asian plover that lives on the ground and cannot perch. Its loud alarm calls, rendered as did he do it or pity to do it, warn of human or animal movement and gave it the name did-he-do-it bird. It is usually seen in pairs or small groups not far from water, sometimes in large flocks in winter (Wikipedia, general species account).
It nests in a ground scrape and lays three to four camouflaged eggs. Adults near the nest dive at potential predators while calling noisily. The chicks follow their parents to feed as soon as they hatch and hide by lying low on the ground or in grass when threatened.
