The river lapwing is 29–32cm long, with a black crest, crown, face and central throat, grey-white neck sides and nape, a grey-brown breast band, and white underparts with a black belly patch. It resembles the closely related spur-winged lapwing of Africa and has sometimes been considered the same species. Young birds have brown tips to the black head feathers, a sandier brown back and pale fringes (Wikipedia, general species account).
It breeds from the Indian subcontinent eastwards to South-east Asia and appears to be entirely sedentary. It lays two eggs in a ground scrape. The source does not describe its status in China (Wikipedia, general species account).
