Size
33–36cm
Wingspan
67–76cm
The roseate tern is a small-to-medium tern, 33–36cm long with a 67–76cm wingspan, which can be confused with the common tern, the Arctic tern and the larger, similarly plumaged Sandwich tern. 'Roseate' refers to the pink breast in breeding plumage, and in winter the forehead becomes white and the bill black. The thin, sharp bill is black with a red base that develops through the breeding season (Wikipedia, general species account).
It breeds in colonies on coasts and islands, at times with other seabirds. The specific name honours the Scottish physician and collector Dr Peter McDougall. The source does not describe its status in China (Wikipedia, general species account).
