Scrub, evergreen and deciduous forest
Range
South and Southeast Asia
The rufous woodpecker is a medium-sized brown woodpecker of South and Southeast Asia. It is short-billed and forages in pairs on small insects, particularly ants and termites, in scrub, evergreen and deciduous forest. It is noted for building its nest inside the carton nests of arboreal ants of the genus Crematogaster (Wikipedia, general species account).
It was once placed in the otherwise Neotropical genus Celeus because of its looks, but DNA work showed this was convergence and it belongs in its own genus, Micropternus. About ten subspecies are widely recognised, with the nominate form from Java.
