It has a longer tail and a narrower white rump than other species in its complex. The common and specific names honour the Indian ornithologist Salim Ali (Wikipedia, general species account).

It is migratory but its wintering range is unknown. It breeds from the eastern Tibetan Plateau eastwards through western Sichuan, building nests on cliffs and laying two or three eggs, and returns to the same site year after year (Wikipedia, general species account).
