The Siberian chipmunk is a small ground squirrel marked by four pale and five dark longitudinal stripes across its back. Adults are 18–25cm long, including a tail that accounts for roughly one-third of the total length, and weigh 50–150g depending on season and food availability. Males and females are externally similar, although coat colour varies somewhat across the species' broad geographic range. (Wikipedia, general species account)
In China it occurs in northern and central regions, using coniferous forest, wooded mountain slopes, shrubs, rocky places and forest edges. Individuals usually occupy separate territories and build deep burrows with nesting, storage and waste chambers. Large stores of seeds and other foods sustain them underground during winter. Breeding begins after hibernation; females produce three to eight young after a gestation of 28–35 days. (Wikipedia, general species account)
