The small-toothed ferret-badger is a slender, short-furred mustelid and the smallest badger described by the opened account. Its upperparts vary from dark chocolate brown to greyish or fawn brown, while the underside may be white or orange. A black face, white forehead and variable dark mask are conspicuous. It also has large ears, a bushy tail and strong foreclaws used for digging. (Animal Diversity Web)
The species occurs through central China, Taiwan and Hainan as part of a wider Asian range, inhabiting tropical or subtropical forest and grassland. It is nocturnal and shelters in excavated holes, old burrows, rock crevices or sometimes tree branches. Earthworms, insects and amphibians are important foods, supplemented by small rodents, other invertebrates and fruit. Females rear two or three cubs in a burrow. (Animal Diversity Web)
