Eggs are typically laid in shallow puddles, which leads to the death of many tadpoles when the puddles dry (Wikipedia, general species account).
The mating season runs from March to July depending on the local climate. It hibernates in the ground, usually in groups, in holes up to 2m deep, and eats spiders and beetles (Wikipedia, general species account).
