The striated heron, also known as the mangrove heron or little green heron, is a small heron 35–48cm long with a wingspan of 52–60cm, weighing 130–250g. Adults have a blue-grey back and wings, white underparts, a black cap, a dark line from the bill to under the eye and short yellow legs; juveniles are browner above and heavily streaked below. The underparts are variable, from mid-grey to pinkish-purple or orangey (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is mostly sedentary. Birds stand still at the water's edge to ambush prey, but are easier to see than many small herons, mainly eating small fish, frogs and aquatic insects. The nest is a platform of sticks. The general species text used here is partly about the American form, so Asian specifics are limited (Wikipedia, general species account).
