The Chinese edible frog, also called the East Asian bullfrog or Taiwanese frog (Hoplobatrachus chinensis), is found across China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and much of South-east Asia. It lives in freshwater marshes, ponds, aquaculture ponds, arable land, rural gardens, urban areas, canals and ditches, and breeds in spring to early summer. It is a large, robust frog, up to 12 cm or more in snout-vent length, with females larger than males, and it feeds mainly on insects. (Wikipedia, general species account)
The frogs are commonly sold in wet markets, seafood markets and pet stores. The domesticated Thai variety and wild Chinese populations belong to two separate genetic lineages, and a 2015 study suggested the species may be a cryptic species complex. (Wikipedia, general species account)
