The Chinese grouse, also known as Severtzov's grouse, is the smallest grouse in the world. Females average 270–407g and 32.7–38.4cm in body length, and males 279–390g and 35.5–40.3cm. The plumage is mostly brown with a lot of white and black patterning on the belly; males have a black chin patch and females do not. It looks similar to the hazel grouse, with a few differences in plumage colour and pattern (Wikipedia, general species account).
It gives a variety of alarm calls and feeds primarily on the buds and twigs of willows in winter. The breeding season begins between March and May, and once a female has chosen a mate the pair live together in the male's territory until the end of the breeding season (Wikipedia, general species account).
