Tetraogallus tibetanus
Habitat
High-altitude regions of the Western Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau
Clutch size
4–6 eggs
The Tibetan snowcock is found in high-altitude regions of the Western Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau, where it overlaps in part with the larger Himalayan snowcock. It has a greyish head and neck with a white crescent patch behind the eye, a white underside with black stripes, white chin, throat and breast with two grey breast bands, and grey wing coverts and tertials with white trim. In flight the secondaries show a broad white trailing edge (Wikipedia, general species account).
Four to six eggs are laid, and the male stands sentinel while the female incubates. The flight is swift and often accompanied by a whistling call. It calls in the morning and evening and is quiet in the middle of the day, and on settling it shakes its tail several times in the manner of the willow ptarmigan (Wikipedia, general species account).
