The twite is a small brown finch about the size and shape of a linnet, 13–13.5 cm long, partially migratory with a strongly disjunct distribution in northern Europe and in the Asian mountains from eastern Turkey to north-eastern China. It lacks the red head patch and breast of the linnet and redpolls: it is brown streaked with black above, with a pink rump in adult males and buff to whitish streaked underparts. (Wikipedia, general species account)

It feeds mainly on small seeds and occasionally insects, and often forms large flocks outside the breeding season. The female builds a nest on the ground or low in a bush and lays three to six light or dark blue eggs with purplish-brown speckles. The call is a distinctive nasal twaa-it, from which the name derives. (Wikipedia, general species account)
