Water buffalo are large bovids closely associated with wetlands and agriculture across much of Asia. They inhabit marshes, wet grasslands, river valleys, irrigated fields, and farms, and regularly wallow in mud or water to cool themselves and reduce biting insects. Their broad hooves support movement over soft ground. Domestic forms vary considerably in size and horn shape and have long been used for traction, milk, meat, and hides. (Animal Diversity Web)

Water buffalo graze grasses and aquatic plants and also consume leaves, herbs, and supplied agricultural feed. Their ruminant digestive system processes large quantities of fibrous vegetation. Females generally give birth to a single calf after gestation lasting approximately 300 to 340 days, although reproductive timing varies across managed populations. Calves can stand soon after birth and remain close to their mothers, receiving milk, protection, and social guidance within the herd. (Animal Diversity Web)
