European turtle doves are slender migratory pigeons recognized by warm brown, black-centered wing feathers and striped patches on the sides of the neck. They breed across Europe, northern Africa and western Asia, occupying open woodland, scrub, hedgerows and mixed agricultural landscapes. After breeding, they undertake long-distance migrations to wintering areas in sub-Saharan Africa, often gathering in flocks along productive feeding and resting sites. (Animal Diversity Web)

Pairs form a relatively flimsy platform nest from twigs, normally concealed in a tree or dense shrub. The usual clutch consists of two eggs, incubated by both parents. As in other pigeons, nestlings receive nutrient-rich crop secretions before gradually consuming softened seeds. Adults feed principally on seeds and grains collected from the ground, with cultivated plants, weeds and occasionally small invertebrates contributing to their varied diet. (Animal Diversity Web)
