Pan's box turtle is a turtle of the family Geoemydidae found in China, in Shaanxi, Hubei, Chongqing and Sichuan. The yellow-headed box turtle is sometimes included in it as a subspecies (The Reptile Database; Wikipedia, general species account).

The specific name is probably in honour of the Chinese herpetologist Pan Lei. The species is oviparous, and the nominate subspecies is endemic to the central Chinese provinces of Shaanxi, Sichuan and Hubei. Individuals are so valuable in trade that a single catch has been reported to fetch more than US$10,000 (Turtle Conservancy, 2017). (The Reptile Database; Wikipedia, general species account)
