It occurs in southern China and mainland Southeast Asia, inhabiting forested mountains, steep rocky or karst slopes and scrub, in some areas reaching approximately 4,500m. Chinese serows are secretive and generally solitary, sheltering in forest and feeding on young leaves and shoots.
